Ethel Blanch Stoker Journal
1979
Monday January 1, 1979
Football—did watch Rose Parade, then football rest of day. Keith called and asked us up to watch football there, but Lee was in the middle of a game & we waited till it was over. By then it was almost dark and cold so we stayed home.
Tuesday January 2, 1979
About noon Ray came to hang drapes that they had given us. They really look nice and I appreciate them very much. They went to Lora Jo’s. I decided to mix bread and got salt, water, oil, and honey in. Honey was rather stiff so thot I would turn it [the breadmixer] on for a minute. I didn’t put the cover on and it splashed liquid all over. My little TV was on the cabinet and it wrecked it.
Wednesday January 3, 1979
Took TV into Othello & of course, they didn’t work on Panasonic. Got license for camper and car and went to Moses Lake. There is a place there that repairs them. Went to Schilberg [lawyer] who closed deal on selling place to get some money that we should of gotten last of ’78, but he said he had it, but irrigation wasn’t adequate on farm. Pump not big enough or something. So of course, it was a let down. Stopped to Sampson who sold the place and he is coming out Sat. to go over contract. I’m sick.
Thursday January 4, 1979
Got income tax papers about ready to go in. Headache today. My stomach has been bothering me. Ma[y]be Indosin I’m taking.
[page 37]
Friday January 5, 1979
Got papers ready to go to C.P.A.[Kennewick?]. Lee even got breakfast ready. We called but couldn’t see him till next Thursday.
I had shortened drapes so we took them to Kennewick to cleaners to be cleaned and pressed. Will get them when we go to C.P.A. Looked for 2 chairs for front room Did buy some green ones [$]405 for pair. I can take them back if color isn’t right. Hope to borrow Ray’s pickup. It’s new & clean to get them.
Went to cemetery to see Donald’s headstone. Found it, or Lee did. I couldn’t of even went to the cemetery. It was really nice. Vesta had both Donald’s and her name on it. It’s been just over a year and it really touched us both—to think we were the ones to break the news to Vesta and Lee to identify Don. Lee was especially broken up.
Saturday January 6, 1979
Myra called and they have been sick. Dennis has tonsillitis. Mindi, strep infection. Got from Bryce, no doubt. Myra also had it. So won’t have Bryce blessed again this month.
Sunday January 7, 1979
Went to S[unday] School and Relief Society. Started out new year right by bearing my testimony. It was so cold that we did not go to fast meeting.
Monday January 8, 1979
About noon called Ella and asked them
[page 38]
over to spend the evening. Gave them chili I had in fridg for 2 weeks or so, but it was still good. Baked a huckleberry pie and fruit salad. They seemed to enjoy it. Played rook and Yahtze. They left about 11. Ray brought our chairs out from Pasco. Guess color will go, but still think blue ones would be better, but Lee doesn’t. Won’t do anything till get drapes home from cleaners.
Wednesday January 10, 1979
Been crocheting pillows and doilies for Ann’s birthday tomorrow. Got them done except run out of white thread on pillow. They called and said TV would be about [$] 50 to 75 to get repaired. So told them to forget it. Cost us [$] 10 for estimates. Sent for records. Lee yesterday started recording his life on tapes. He said Kirby was the Dr. we first took Lora Jo to when she had mengitis, but I know it was Maulding. He then turned her over to Dr. Scott. We argued, but no one would change.
Got up this morning and it was snowing. Guess there must be 5” on ground, ut it isn’t quite so cold. About 20 above. Had about 17 days of zero weather. Coldest one a guy said in 17 years and longest.
Thursday January 11, 1979
Took papers to C.P.A. Left about 9 a.m. Stopped to Dennis.’ He was getting ready to go to Dr. His throat
[page 39]
still hasn’t cleared up. Snowed all day in Pasco, road were slick. Still got to take more papers to C.P.A. about trading our place in Nyssa for Wash property. He has a mess on his hands, but I hope after this year, it will be OK. Stopped and got the drapes. Didn’t cost as much as I expected, but was still [$]23.50. They sure make the room tho. Home teachers came. Enjoy them—Mr McDonald and Mr. Strate.
Heard yesterday Dale Stoker was missing in a plane he was piloting from Ogden to San Diego. Lee listened to Salt Lake radio tonight and they reported that the beep on the radar or something had been picked up, but night came too soon and it was stormy. He left Tuesday so has been out in the weather for 2 days. Surely hope they are alive—a family of 4 from by Provo was with him.
Saturday January 13, 1979
Washed. In the afternoon Jim came and we went to Lora Jos with him, had supper and played a hand of rook. Got home about 8:30.
Sunday January 14, 1979
Keith called and said Gene Stoker had called him and they had found the plane. Figured all died on impact . Surely hope so if they had to go. They removed the women but the
[page 40]
men were still out. Went to S[unday] School, Relief Society, and Sacrament [Meeting]. Lee and I started reading the D[octrine] &C[ovenants] together. Had fireside later at Horace and Ruby Hawarth’s.
Monday January 15, 1979
Met with Paul Sampson. Still a mixup on our place. Mr. Ochoa is evidently wanting a larger pipe to go to the circle. We figure it is adeqauate. The lawyer has his money. It was supposed to be put in escrow. We are sure blue as we figured all was clear sailing after the place was sold. Hope it doesn’t go to court. Went to bank to set up escrow, but us & Mr. Ochoa has to sign papers and I don’t suppose he will.
Went to John Deere day. Had a nice meal & seen film on machinery. Came home and worked on my life history.
Tuesday January 16, 1979
Ann called and said Audrey was in the hospital. She stepped on a rake and it went thru her foot and her other one was sprained so she went to Dr. Field and he put her in the hospital. Went to R[elief] S[ociety].
Wednesday January 17, 1979
Had to take papers to CPA so stopped & seen Audrey. She was there just for precautions as she was allergic to tetnus shots.
[page 41]
Came back to Vanae’s to tell her Uncle Dick had called and Dale’s funeral would be Thur. They were ready to eat so we ate with them and went to the wrestling match. Connell won but Scott lost his match.
Friday January 19, 1979
Helped on a quilt to Sr. Roylances. Then at night went to Othello’s wrestling. Othello won & Craig won his easily.
Monday January 22, 1979
Lora Jo called & asked me to go to Connell to B&H sale. Went but wasn’t interested in anything for me. Got Jess a robe [$]17.00 for 6.00 for his birthday.
Dave came and stayed with Lee. We had to get back cause I had to go teaching at 1:30. I had beans cooked but Lee fixed chili. They had eaten. Jess & family & Sr. Mecham came for supper for Jess’s birthday. Had chili, apple salad, apple pudding & punch. Played Yahtzee.
Tuesday January 23, 1979
[Paul] Sampson [the realtor selling the farm] came out. We still haven’t our money for our placed that was due last Dec. It’s the lawyer in Moses Lake. Guess we’re going to have to get a lawyer to get it settled. So have asked Keith to make an appointment with their man at Ritzville which he did for tomorrow.
Wednesday January 24, 1979
Went to lawyer Sackmann today. He
[page 42]
was amused at the reading of the contract. It stated the circle should be in excellent condition. He said it was a very poor choice of words. He called Moses Lake & told Schilberg he couldn’t hold the money up regardless. It had to be paid then differences ironed out. So he sent them a letter stating money had to be paid plus interest and [$] 50.00, his fee. However, he wasn’t sure. We might have to replace the main line. It’s only 6” & should be 8”.
Thursday January 25, 1979
Found out today Sampson should of had the escrow all set up which he hasn’t. One passing buck to the other.
Went to Sr. Citizens pot luck tonite. Meal good. Paid [$] 2.00 dues. Foggy & slick coming home. Been a touch cold winter. Ruby Haworth fell on ice and broke her right wrist.
Sunday January 27, 1979
Conference in Moses Lake—split sessions. We went at 11:30. Diane Roylances mission testimony at Sacrament [meeting] Got to 0 degrees last nite. This sure has been a long, cold winter. Hope Feb. is better.
Tuesday January 29, 1979
Well, my R[elief] S[ociety] lesson is over. Again I’m not sure how it went. I’m sure I could of done better, but had many comments on it and it makes me feel good.
[page 43]
Wednesday January 30, 1979
Took a small bowl of stew, pumpkin cookies, and Jello salad to Ruby and Ileen Peterson. She has had back surgery. Also gave Ileen a few thots on my lesson. She is a very spiritual and loving woman. Dennis called & are having baby blessed Sunday. Also he has changed jobs. Sure hope for the better. I didn’t like him working Sundays, but feel like he had a good job where he was at U & I.
Saturday February 3, 1979
Lee helped with our Saturday work so we could watch sports Spectacular on TV in the afternoon, but instead of sports, diving, skating, etc, we watched a basketball game. It was much more important to Lee. At night we went to Connell to see Scott & Kyle wrestle, but Scott got beat out so he didn’t perform, but Kyle pinned his guy. Vanae put up my hair later and I had to come home and dry it before I could go to bed. So it was midnight before I turned in.
Sunday February 4, 1979
Went to Pasco to fast meeting to have Bryce blessed. It started at 10 a.m. so had to leave by 9. After fast meeting they held Sunday School. Dennis and Myra gave the family presentation. Both did extra well. We had Mindi. She was good.
Went to Dennis’ for dinner. They had turkey. It was good. Myra isn’t feeling too good. Has been to a specialist. Guess it’s colitis. She has lost weight.
[page 44]
Monday February 5, 1979
Got up this morning and a Chinook wind was blowing. Got up to 40 [degrees]. The snow is beginning to go from the garage top. It’s been since the middle of November that it’s been below freezing. Got to --[minus] 12 one day last week. We have been having a problem keeping the house warm in that temperature. Today it’s great.
Tuesday February 6, 1979
Went to R[elief] S[ociety] with Sr. Fielding. In afternoon got our teaching done. Vanae called and asked if I would tend Laron & Nicole while they went to Rexburg to see Jeri on her birthday. Expect them home Friday.
It is still thawing. Really seems good. We still haven’t heard any more about our place. It really has us worried.
Sunday February 11, 1979
Went to Jim’s for dinner. Went to Sacrament [meeting] to Basin City & came to Fieldings for fireside.
Wednesday February 14, 1979
Valentines day. Went to Lora Jos as she fell & bruised her leg & Dr. told her to stay down. Hope all is well.
Friday February 16, 1979
Snowing now. Have had some rain. Am so thankful it has warmed up. A little but too fast, I guess. Mesa is flooded. I guess bad. 200 had to leave their homes. I really feel for them. Permenant today to Moses Lake & box social tonight at church.
[page 45]
Heard the church made better than [$]4,000.00 on the social and work pledges. Ted Thompson came and auctioned for them. Lee and I think most men got their wives’ boxes. He paid [$]36.00 for mine. Quite a few Mexicans were there with their boxes.
Sunday February 18, 1979
Got my Sunday Relief Society lesson over. I’m not sure I’m satisfied. The spirit just wasn’t there. Guess I’m not much of a teacher. A lot came and said they enjoyed it but—
Went to Vanae’s for dinner, turkey & all. Real good as usual. She is a very good cook. Spoke in Sacrament [meeting] so did Lee. I spoke on being a example. Feel good about that. Everyone was attentive. Lee spoke on parents responsibility to children. Sort of the same line he gave to Max Fieldings to a fireside later. He did very well.
Monday February 19, 1979
STARTED DIET. Hope I can stick with it. So far all is well except too much fat.
Tuesday February 20, 1979
R[elief] S[ociety] today and my lesson. Think all enjoyed it, but I still don’t think I’m much of a teacher. Vanae & Ray stopped. Had taken income tax in. Vanae isn’t feeling too well again. She is expecting. Sure hope all goes well. She has her hands full with Ray in Bishopric & her
[page 46]
President of the Primary. Kids are a big help most of the time.
Wednesday February 21, 1979
Went to Pascco. We got a tax notice of [$]120. Have got to straighten out where kids trailer homes are. Coming home stopped at Dennis.’ He is talking of quitting his job. Has another one with the guys brother if he wants it. Sure hope he doesn’t make a mistake. Got home in time to hurry & make tossed salad for 10. Got 2 heads of lettuce which cost me $2.90—terrible. High Priest party. Went to J Roylances nice big house. Ham, baked spuds, etc. Sure broke my diet. Do better tomorrow, but didn’t stuff [myself].
Saturday February 24, 1979
Went to Kents to plan R[elief] S[ociety] 17th of March supper. Only it’s to be held 9th Mar. Coming home I stopped by Ileen Peterson’s and discussed my lesson with her. She is much better. Is up and around now some. Ross is some better also. When I got home Lee had vacumed, etc so nothing much to do.
Sunday February 25, 1979
Jim and Ann & family came for dinner. After dinner Jim didn’t feel well so had a nap. They were planning on going to church with us, but after supper Jim just didn’t feel up to it so they went home. We attended church. Was told to more fully honor the fast
[page 47]
and pay more fast offerings. After church we went to Brad Kents to a fireside where Lee gave [a lesson] about the same talk he did to Fieldings.
Monday February 26, 1979
Great day—Eclips of the sun. For the past several days they predicted rain and clouds. It was a little cloudy, but one could still see it. We watched most of it on TV from Yakima & Goldendale, but did glance at the sun for a second during total eclips. It only lasted less than 2 min. Got dark. The yard light went on. Kind of an erie feeling at 8:15 a.m. School started a hour early so students would not be on their way and look at the sun with naked eyes—thereby damaging the eyes. The next eclips will not be until year 2017 so I won’t be around to see it. I have seen one before and Lee also abt 1918, but I don’t remember too much about it. When the moon hid the sun one could see bright light all around it. Then looking in S.West it had hues of a beautiful sunset. Today is beautiful, a few scattered clouds, but temperature in 50 degrees.
Sunday March 4, 1979
Raining today. After S[unday] School went in Bp. Garner’s office to get recommend to go to temple. First thing he said was, “have you ever thot of going on a mission.” We discussed it. Lee not being able to wear his teeth all day, but in the end, we agreed to go.
[page 48]
Went with Keith to fast meeting at 4 as the family was coming at 6 to make plans for our golden wedding. I put on a canned ham. Had potato salad, sliced tomatoes, ice cream, and Vanae brought a cake. Jess said he would bring drink, but forgot so we had water. Told them about our mission call.
Monday March 5, 1979
Went to Umatilla to get a new set of teeth for Lee. Certainly hope they will be comfortable. Will know in 2 weeks.
Tuesday March 6, 1979
Went to Moses Lake to have Pres. Christensen sign recommends. Norman had already called him about our mission. Told him we did not want to go till after June 12. He said in about a month he would interview us, but to get a physical & teeth & eyes taken care of now. We are leaving for Ogden and Eliza & Parley’s golden wedding on Sat. in the morning. I feel badly as told Lora Jo I would take care of kids while she goes to the hospital. Hope all goes well.
Took 150 spuds to Delores Garner to bake for me for the R[elief] S[ociety] birthday supper. As I won’t be here on the 9th.
Wednesday March 7, 1979
Couldn’t sleep. Woke up at 3 and couldn’t go back to sleep. Ann & girls are going with us. Will leave their place at 7. Naturally we are a little late. Got to Pasco and Lee decided the muffler needed
[page 49]
tied up better so went to Columbia Center and had it done. Left there at 9. Went to Burley planning on staying the nite, but Herman wasn’t home so made S[alt] Lake about 9:30-10. After leaving Ann with her mother, we went to Verda’s.
Thursday March 8, 1979
Got up and went to temple, but it took most of the day to do one session. Temple Pres. talked and answered questions a few things I didn’t know. If one takes his garments off & leaves them off, all he has to do is put them on and repent. Also the parable of the ten virgins he said because the 5 wasn’t prepared or had oil was the garment which they did not have on. Said if the bridesgroom came in the twinkling of an eye they wouldn’t have time even to get them out of the drawer and put them on before the doors were shut.
Les & Annie, Lee & Eunice came to Verda’s at nite and we went over genealogy sheets. At least we will all have them the same.
Friday March 9, 1979
Went to S[alt] L[ake] and Lee got him 2 suits, a dark blue one, [$]99.00, and a grey one, [$]65.00. I got 3 dresses, [$]30-20-10, so neither will need clothes for awhile. Also got 7 ties at 99 cents. They were marked as high as [$]10.00 each. My dresses were [$]60 & 50 & 30, but were marked down. I couldn’t pay the original price. Went to Jane’s and stayed the night.
Saturday March 10, 1979
Seen Grace & Allen then went back to
[page 50]
Jane’s and got ready to go to W[est] Weber to Eliza’s golden wedding [anniversary]. I wore a new dress & Lee, his grey suit. We really looked great, ha—as if 2 big, fat people could look that way, but we did looked better than usual. Went to Vals and watched BYU play ball. Then went to church house, 2 p.m. to 5.
The golden wedding open house was very nice. Nina catered it. Had a sherbet, cake, drink & mint-chocolate that she had made. All very good. Then Eliza had fixed supper for the family—ham, scalloped potatoes, Jello salad, hot rolls, and wedding cake & ice cr[eam]. It was all very good. Came back and stayed to Eliza’s.
Sunday March 11, 1979
Lee & Don went to Priesthood. Women went to S[unday] School at W[est] Weber. After dinner, we went to Glen’s. Laura’s mind has really snapped. She talks to herself in the mirror and tries to feed the girl there. The dresser mirror was all streaked with food. Glen is taking care of her himself. House was clean & neat, but Laura had 2 dresses on and a coat all the time we were there. Went to Garth’s and seen some pictures he had taken of our reunion last year. They all turned out well. He gave us a couple he had taken from the slides.
[page 51]
Monday March 12, 1979
Left Eliza’s at 7 to come home. Drove as far as Herman’s and stopped for a hour. Went to Cloyd Taylor’s restaurant & had dinner. He wouldn’t let us pay for it. Got home about 9, tired, but very happy. Jim told us Lora Jo had had her baby and our 150 tons of hay had gotten burned up, burning ditch banks and it got away from them. A good way to get it moved.
Tuesday March 13, 1979
Grandma Stokers birthday. She would have been 96. After unpacking we went to Royal to see the new grandson. Russell Taylor Phillips born March 8, 1979. Weighed 9# 4 oz., a big one. She didn’t wait until I got back to help. She is doing great & baby is good. Lee pruned grapes & berries & bushes. We then came home and worked outside as the weather is great until dark.
Lee called Mr. Ochoa as we haven’t as yet got a payment . We should have had on the 1st. Bills are piling up. Lights [$] 130 for 2 mo., gas tanks were filled. Insurance plus place payment. They are meeting tomorrow. Hope no problem.
Wednesday March 14, 1979
Met to Sampsons office. Looks as tho we will have to stand the expense of a new line to circle irrigation. He, Mr. Ochoa, wants both lines, one to corner & other to center, and another pump. Mr. Sampson agreed to buy a used pump
[page 52]
as he has gotten most of the money from this deal so far, but they also want us to forget the interest and lawyers fees that we engaged. So don’t know. Will meet again Monday and get it all finished up I hope.
After meeting Mr. Ochoa gave us our check [$]17,300. Sounds a lot but still it will not reach everything. Went to Moses Lake and finished paying on the place for another year. Then Lee went to help Keith out. He has spent weeks on trying to put together a deal for farmers to buy U & I Sugar Co. as U & I are closing down. They got the deal closed but now it doesn’t look like enough farmers can get the money together to pay their {$}150.00 per acre. The men have left their work and worked so hard for nothing it seems. So Lee is helping out. We owe Keith anyway so this might be a way to pay him back. I took a check to Connell & deposited it also paid our bills thank goodness. They worry me.
Preparing R[elief] S[ociety] lesson for Tue. & cleaned shop, but Lee has to finish it as I can’t clean off the work bench.
Monday March 19, 1979
Supposed to meet with Ochoa but he couldn’t come. Sampson told us what he had in mind which included another pump, new main line to circle plus around the
[page 53]
house which could cost better than [$]12,000. We went to Pringle Irr[igation Co.] and they said what we had was adequate. They are coming out Sat. Hopefully Ochoa and his irrigation man will be there so they can get it straightened up for good. Ochoa offered to pay half and Sampson offered to help.
We went to Umatilla where Lee got his new teeth. Said they felt better than any had but still a rough spot on them. Hope and pray he can be comforted with them.
Tuesday March 20, 1979
Relief Society lesson. Went good, I think. Then went to Sr.Citizens home and had dinner for $1.00 and quilted. Enjoyed it. Sugar Co. deal did not pass so guess its all down the drain. It’s too late now to do more. The weather is beautiful—in the 60 degrees daytime—cold at nite tho. Lee putting in about 12 hrs. a day helping Keith. Found out while we were in Utah they put Vanae in the Stake Primary, 1st coun[selor]. She isn’t feeling too hot as she is expecting.
Monday to Saturday March 26 to March 31, 1979
I went with Vanae to Ricks [College] to spend the week and mothers week with Jeri Ann. We didn’t leave till about 2 as Laron had tipped an old pump over and it fell on him so Vanae had to take him to the Dr and found he had a broken collar bone. The Dr. put him in a brace so Ray watched him and Ann
[page 54]
took Nichole. We drove straight thru to Rexburg, getting there about 2 a.m., tired and sleepy. Jeri and her roommate was sleeping on the floor. Their bed waiting for us. Jeri served us breakfast in bed. First time since I was in hospital was I able to eat without first getting up. Vanae and myself went with her to some classes—missionary, science, English, where they were discussing Shakespear[e’s] Othello, a dance class, and her piano lesson. We also took in 3 genealogy workshops where they are stressing writing your history as well as getting the 4-generation group sheets in. Took in a devotional where Miss Reaves—a handicapped person paralyzed from waist down—gave a lecture. She was very inspiring and [had] a lot of humor. She had great faith that she would still be able to walk. She has served 2 missions. In fact it was on her first mission she was in an automobile accident that left her paralyzed. Her arms was also, but she has regained the use of them some. I found there is a lot of walking—a lot uphill. I went huffing & puffing along. Had to go slow going upstairs, but I made it. I’ve been exercising a little so I didn’t even get stiff and sore.
[page 55]
The night before we left[,] all the girls fixed supper for us. One other grandmother and 3 mothers came from around Rigby and one from Logan. Then some of us went and watched [“]Baker’s Last Run[”] and[“]The Teton Disaster[”] on TV. Got back to room around 11. Left next morning about 7:30. Left Jeri in tears. Stopped to Ray’s mothers’ in Homedale, about half hour or so, and arrived home about 8 p.m. A girl from Warden rode with us, Roylance’s granddaughter.
All well at home. Lee had kept house very clean.
Sunday April 1, 1979
Lora Jo’s birthday. She called and asked us over to listen to conference. It only comes on channel 2 and we can’t get it. Had a nice dinner. Lee wasn’t feeling too good. He is trying to wear his teeth and taking codine. So we came home about 3. I didn’t go to church as something is hay wire with transmission in car and I didn’t want to take camper.
Monday April 2, 1979
Vanae & myself went to Royal and took Lora Jo out to dinner for her birthday. Jana went and watched kids. It was 8 p.m. when I got home. Lee had had supper.
Tuesday April 3, 1979
Cheri brought Jailynn for me to watch
[page 56]
so her & Audrey could take kids to Logan to temple. Will be back Friday. The wind is still blowing. It started the last few days of March and each day gets worse. Surely hope it soon lets up as Jesse’s grain isn’t up enough to hold it from blowing.
Lee is still having grief with his teeth. These are better but not good enough.
Wednesday April 4, 1979
Went to dentist. He cleaned teeth and took a full exray—[$]44.00 worth. Then he took [$]10 off for missionary. I’m all thru there. Lee also went to Umatilla with his teeth. Mabe it he goes enough he can wear his teeth. Jana took care of Jailyn. Wind still blowing. He also brought a new camera [$]280.00. Hope it’s good.
Friday April 6, 1979
Guys fixed transmission on Buick, but it still needs adjusting. Mary Ellen called & said Jesse’s motor home had developed problems and they were still in Boise. In dirt & dust everywhere so I’m sure his ground is blowing. Hope all is well.
[page 57]
Saturday April 7, 1979
Jesse got home this morning. Transmission went out, but it, the motor home, was still under warrenty. Jess flew down. Audrey drove so they had to leave outfit in Boise and fly home. Jailyn wasn’t too excited to see her mother. Cleaned all thru house, but wind is still blowing so it won’t do much good.
Sunday April 8, 1979
Went to Royal to church. Lora Jo had Rusty blessed. Louis & Doris Phillips was there also. Ida Bullen bore her testimony and as usual said it was on our account Vern joined the church which made us feel good. We all went to a sumptious dinner to Lora Jo’s. Spud & Francie & kids about 22—regular Thanksgiving. Left about 6 and went to Jim’s. He took more pictures of us. The others were too close. We look like wrinkled barns. Ha. Hope these are good as we need to get our golden wed[ding anniversary announcements] into the printer. So hurry Jim.
Monday April 10, 1979
Lora Jo & girls & Dave’s folks came to visit. I hurried & fixed dinner. Nothing like Sunday, but think they enjoyed it—Spagetti & sauce, tossed salad, cornbread, grape drink, and huckleberry pie, & ice cream. They left about 1:30 as we had a drs app[ointment] at 2:30. Think all is OK with both except old age. Said Lee might be getting cataracts. But that’s what he told
[page 58]
me on my last physical. But we are having our eyes checked later. I’m to go on the 18th for a D & C. Still don’t think it’s necessary, but hate to run the risk of cancer. Dr. was going to fill out our physical sheet and sent it to Bishop. We will hand our dental one in Sunday.
Easter Sunday April 15, 1979
Had a very interesting S[unday] School program about the conviction and cruxifiction of Chris. Then met with Bishop and he filled out forms for our mission. Dennis & Myra came for dinner. Mindi has a bad case of staff infection near her eye. It doesn’t look good. Myra was taking her to Dr. today. She can’t get rid of it. Bryce got it in the hospital when he was born. It has gone thru the family plus Udell’s. They didn’t bring clothes to go to church. Then Keith & family came so we didn’t get to church at nite.
Wednesday April 18, 1979
I had to report to the drs office at 9 a.m. Lee didn’t work so he could take me. At 9:30
I seen Dr. Bolton. He made sure my B[ood] P[ressure], heart, etc was OK and said he would see me later at the hospital. I said 4:30 and he turned to a nurse and told her to call hospital and find out. She came back and said 4:30 so Lee and
[page 59]
myself decided to go to Jim’s and get pictures of our golden wedding announcement & take along with family group sheet and take to the Tri Cities to be printed which we did. Took them to Richland. Got 100 group sheets for [$]35.00 and 300 announcements for [$]30.00.
Came home. Got here about 2:15 and the phone rang. It was the Drs office, saying I was to be operated on at 4:30 and could I come right now. They had called Genevie and she had called all around to find me. We got to the hospital at 3 and of course, had to give blood for type etc. I got a shot about 3:45 and at 4:15 taken to the operating room. There I was positioned for a D & C and a man was putting a I.V. in my arm. That is the last I remembered till in the recovery room. Then I felt so odd. No pain anywhere. Moved a leg to see if I was strapped down & no; it moved. Then moved my arms; OK there. Still couldn’t believe that it was all over and I didn’t hurt anywhere. Soon the nurses came and got me in a wheel chair and took me back to my room Still too groggy for supper. Tho—really spent a good nite.
Lee came at bedtime after ball practice. Vanae and Genevie came about 1:30 and brought me home so Lee could work. Vanae brought cinnamon rolls. Lora Jo came and brought cookies. Genevie went home and brought corn chowder. All are so wonderful. All our family is.
[page 60]
Sometimes I wonder how come I am so lucky to have such a wonderful family.
Saturday April 21, 1979
Genevie brought stew & cake.
Sunday April 22, 1979
I still feel funny like shaking inside and dizzy. When I first got up, I was sure I was OK, but I took a shower and decided I wasn’t up to par yet. Sure hope I soon get over it. Lee has gone to S[unday] S[chool]. Ella called Sat. and was concerned bout the R[elief] S[ociety] lesson I had give to her to give. She & Sr. Stratte came Friday to see me to the hospital, but of course I wasn’t there.
Wednesday April 25, 1979
Still am dizzy & shaky, but the Dr—I went back today—said probably a harmone inbalance and time was the only cure. He did say he had never seen anything like what he took from me. It was big and pear shaped, however, soft and pliable, but until he got the report back, he wouldn’t send the physical to the Bishop. In fact he came right out and said, “If you go on a mission.” I don’t know what he had in mind, but I have faith enough that all will be well.
Saturday April 28, 1979
Yesterday Vanae came. Monday Genevie got our golden wedding announcements and Dad’s family group sheets from the printer. Surprise, on [$]52.00 for 300 wedding and 100 group sheets.
[page 61]
so yesterday Vanae came and helped address some and today Lora Jo came. Only have about two dozen left to address. I’m still shaky to write, but am feeling better every day But sure glad Ella Davidson gave my Relief Society lesson last Sunday & Tue.
Sunday April 29, 1979
Went to S[unday] S[chool]; however, not feeling as good as yesterday. Yesterday Dad’s Little League ball team played their first game. Got beat, but not as badly as Dad had feared as they played the best team. Dad really enjoys it. But they practice every afternoon after school. Went to S[acrament] meeting. Stopped to Keith’s afterward. Got spray to spray dandelions.
Monday April 30, 1979
Went to Dr. to get results of D & C. After waiting , found out there was 2 tests he hadn’t noticed on our health form for a mission. Lee happened to go with me. So we both got a test for TB. The other test was a blood drawing, but results won’t be in till next Monday. So hopefully we can get all our paper work done then. However, we did get good news. All tests from D & C were neg[ative]. Also TB. Went and kept score for dad at ball game. This time they won 7-0. Quit after 4 innings as a big storm came up, winds, dust , etc. Before we got home, it had started to rain. And did it ever.
[page 62]
We stayed in garage for 10 min[utes] before we dared to make a dash for the house. Then got wet.
Tuesday May 1, 1979
In morning went to Pasco and got a peach and apricot tree. Lee thinks they winter dilled that we set out last year. Also all our grapes are dead, except 2 that was protected some. I’ve helped out some. Getting better every day.
Friday May 4, 1979
Matt’s birthday. Also Ruby and Larry had a new baby boy, 8 lbs. 13 oz. So far all well. Dad not feeling too hot today—sore throat & back problems—in bed about all day.
Saturday May 5, 1979
Went to B[asin] City to witness Matt’s baptism. In fact Dad gave a very good talk. Afterward Jess & family & us went to Jim’s for ice cream & cake.
Sunday May 6, l979
Sunday we went to S[unday] School. Bishop Garner came & said he was supposed to tell us to call Pres. Christensen to be interviewed, and he forgot. So for us to go in his office & call which we did. So as a result, didn’t go to S[unday] School, but met with President at Royal Church. We then came home and put roast in oven then went to B[asin] City for fast meeting. Rushed home and got potatoes on as Ray & family & his
[page 63]
Mom & Mr. Ellis came for dinner. Roast pork, spuds, gravey, rolls, salad, beans, corn, & pudding. It turned out pretty good.
Monday May 7, 1979
Went to Dr. Finally all papers were ready to take to stake Pres. All the missionary health papers in. So Monday after little league ball game, we took them to royal. Nothing do, but we had family nite with them. There were 3 kids, had sundaes with them. Then he said we needed 4 pictures of us that the bishop had failed to tell us. So he had a instamatic [camera]. So he took us as we were, slacks etc. I came home and hunted up some pictures Jim had taken that we didn’t like but they at least had a dress and tie on.
Tuesday May 8, 1979
So Tuesday early we took them over to Royal—Sun., Mon. & Tues. No one would think there is a gas shortage. Went to Moses Lake for belt for combine, but they didn’t have one. Hurried home for R[elief] Society then fixed dinner and took to Larrys. Came home & fixed supper for Keith’s family. Want to have all of them before we leave for mission.
Wednesday May 9, 1979
Went to Pasco & got another part for rototiller as it quit again. Looked for a dress, but couldn’t find anything. I’m sure not losing any weight. Am discouraged. Melissa’s birthday tomorrow
[page 64]
and Mindi, the 11.
Friday May 11, 1979
Vanae, Lora Jo, Genevie, & myself went to Spokane to look for a right dress for the reception. Went to Cresent. Brought 3 home, but am only going to keep one. Lee and Keith likes a rose one best. Ordered candy & nuts. Went to a converted Flour Mill and ate.
Mothers Day Sunday May 13, 1979
Yesterday Ann called and asked us for dinner. Before Priesthood Jess and Audrey came and brought me a red and white corsage she had made. Yesterday Vanae brought a pretty carnation corsage. Wore the live one to S[unday] School then changed to Audrey’s. After dinner Dennis and Myra came. Then we went with them to Lora Jos. We stayed too long to get back to Othello to church so went to Royal . After church Lora Jo & family & Dennis came here . After sandwiches Keith came and took our pictures—3 rolls. So some should be good. All kids are too good on Mother’s day. Lora Jo gave me a cookie jar. Jim, a purse, Keith, a long lounging gown, plus other corsages.
Monday to Friday, May 14 to 18, 1979
Spent much of Monday preparing mock chicken salad and rolls for R[elief] S[ociety]. I am chairman of the lunch for today [Tues May 15] so have to be on my toes.
[page 65]
I think it turned out OK. All that was assigned to help really did a great job. Rushed home about 2.
Crammed some things in camper and we went to Mt. Rainier. Lee had filled it with water and when I got home found water all on the floor. So we let all the water out and went to Yakima for a new water pump. This one had frozen during the winter and broke. Got one there but they wouldn’t install it as it was after hours. So drove almost to White Pass and Lee put it on only it wouldn’t fit. So we camped for nite and next morning drove back [to Yakima], but they didn’t have another kind. Went to Burd & Burd RV. They had one. Lee put it on there, but had to have a guy come and hook the wires up. Filled up with gas and water and started out once more. Hit snow at higher elevation, but road was dry and bare. Unless it was too early and nothing open, it was just a road around the mt, but very pretty. All the wild flowers were out etc. Camped in the park. I took a cake mix to at least give Lee a birthday cake, but ended up having some cookies I took. Went thru Eminclaw. Yards and flowers there beautiful. Got gas, but could only get 10 gal as the fuel
[page 66]
shortage is really being felt. Read in the paper where road construction would mabe have to quit on account of no fuel for their outfits. Went to Seattle and spent 2 or 3 hours in the zoo. Went to Ivars & had a fish dinner. Drove thru Monroe & started over Stephen’s Pass. Camped for nite. Came thru Wenatchee and got home about 3 p.m. All was well except we stopped and got the pictures we had left to be developed and none of them were good. So will have to take them over again. Keith things his flash wasn’t working.
Saturday May 19, 1979
Cleaned for fireside Sunday. House is terrible.
Sunday May 20, 1979
Fireside good. Jim took time showing slides and telling of Samoa. Served sundaes. Think everyone enjoyed both Jim & food.
Tuesday May 22, 1979
My lesson in R[elief] S[ociety] This is my last one. I put quite a bit of work in it and was rewarded by one of my better lessons. Or everyone said they really enjoyed it. A good not to stop one. Still haven’t heard about our mission. Thot we would of heard by now.
[page 67]
Thursday May 24, 1979
Went & had our eyes checked. Course both needed glasses. [$]72.00 for exam. Glasses almost [$]100 each. Hurried home as Lee had a ball game which they had to forfeit as the pitcher had a sore arm so got a pitcher too old to play. As a result we won one of the best teams 5 to 0. Happy day. He was a bro. of the catcher and was good. It put a spark of life in the team again.
Friday May 25, 1979
Took will to Ritzville to have it read. Course it needed changes but glad to set my mind at ease as it was written in Ore. 21 years ago. Now we don’t even have a farm. Went on to Spokane & took dress back at there. Good.
Sunday and Monday May 27 and 28, 1979
Had Keith & family for dinner. Their well quit and Sargents can’t pull it for a few days. Also had them Monday nite. Kids came and showered. Hot water here was no problem. The last kid in had cold water and it was Mike. Monday Skip’s girl friend came also.
Tuesday May 29, 1979
This day we got our long awaited letter from Salt Lake. It said you will be going to Manchester England. I never did think that we would be that lucky and yet
[page 68]
deep down I felt we would be called either to England or to the Indians. Both Lee and myself are very happy and excited. Don’t know too much as yet. Will get more information when we send in our acceptance. When we told Genevie she insisted that we celebrate by going out to eat. When they got here Lee had the basketball game on and asked Keith to come in. It was the Sonics and Bullets—championship game or something. Anyway Genevie & myself went tro Freddies and got Chinese food and brought [it] home. So killed 2 birds with one stone. Craig & Mike came to shower so they had a taste also.
Thursday May 31, 1979
Last day of May. Kids are working hard on our anniversary party. Flora called this morning and said Elwood Flinders passed away yesterday. Understood he only weighed 86 lbs. Has been sick for a long time. Would love to go down as I felt so close to Iona, but it’s almost impossible now.
Friday June 1, 1979
Called Iona. She seemed
[page 69]
relieved to think Elwood was out of pain. We had talked of going down, but red brake lite came on in Buick so we or I decided to stay home. Lee would of gone. We gave Iona a invite to ride with us to Logan to temple.
Have appointment with choripractor in Moses Lake today. Hope he can help my leg as it’s getting worse. Went to crab feed & to Chuck & Ellas 10th wedding anniversary.
Saturday June 2, 1979
Tended Megan, Rusty & ----- while kids practiced for our party. Then had Jim & family & Mrs. Wahlquist & Lora Jo & family minus Dave for supper. Hadn’t planned [for] Jim but had plenty except for chicken & all had a piece & some 2 so am sure glady they stayed. We enjoyed them all. Lora Jo took spuds etc home for Dave. He is so busy right now.
Well, everyone knows by now that we are going to England. I’m thrilled about going and yet frightened for fear I don’t measure up for a missionary. My knowledge of the gospel isn’t too great after all these years. Will I be able to understand their brogue and ways. Can I memorized the discussions. Glad Lee is going. I have no fear for him. He can meet people and visit like they had known each other years while it is hard for me. Wish it were otherwise. Also he knows the gospel.
[page 70]
Sunday June 3, 1979
We went to 3rd ward Fast meeting. Larry had baby blessed—Johnathan Michael. Came home and about 7 the whole gang (family adults) came except Dennis. (Hope he realizes he is part of our family. He doesn’t come too much. Yet he is farther away & hard.) They presented Dad & myself a quilt they had made with picture blocks of where we lived—horses, ferry on Snake, outhouse & kids. A lot of work, but it is beautiful. I will forgive all the talking behind my back and falsehoods. We’ll be glad when it’s over. They all have spent much time and money for us. We love them dearly.
Eliza called. We will meet the plane at 3:15 Wed. Jeri is coming home tomorrow.
Heard Myra is working in Penneys & Dennis quit his job farming—too long hours. Hope & pray he can find something & will stick with it.
Monday June 4, 1979
Lee finished painting the eves of the house. Rest will have to wait for a couple of weeks &his back is still bad. Both went to the chiropractror. He said Lee was awfully tight & deformed in back. Both got a treatment. We had to take camper
[page 71]
as Buick was in garage to have brakes fixed. I waited for it to be finished & Lee came home. Then they discovered the front end was broken. So I had to call Lee and he had to come back to Moses Make for me. He then came home, ate, & went to bed. I went to Firesides with Mrs. Fielding. About 10:30 Vern Thompson called. He had gotten our announcement. We 3 visited for half hour or more. It’s been cooler and wind today. In fact strong wind almost made one lose control of camper when a big gust would come or pass a big truck. Lots of work to do tomorrow. Glen’s birthday.
Tuesday June 5, 1979
Really put in a day getting house cleaned etc. Then had to go to a ball game to keep score.
Wednesday June 6, 1979
Finished dusting. Then Lee had a appointment in Umatilla to have teeth worked on at 9:30 so really had to leave early. I looked for shoes, but no luck. They are all sandals. Lee got a white shirt, [$]14.00. Went to the airport to meet Eliza at 3:15 [at the Pasco airport], but the plane was late. Lee had a ball game and couldn’t wait so he came home and I stayed. It got in about 4:45. There was an oil leak so it was held up in Seattle.
We went to the café there and
[page 72]
had soup & sandwich. Dennis came and got us and we went there until Lee came. Good to have her here.
Thursday and Friday June 7 and 8, 1979
Thursday went to Vanae’s. Friday had a appointment with chiropractor. While gone, Sears guy came to fix my washer. Left a note nothing wrong, but it won’t spin so guess I’ll have to have him come again. Went to Skip’s graduation. Also had passport pictures taken.
Saturday June 9, 1979
The children have worked so hard for our 50th years together. They have spent money as well as precious hours practicing songs etc., but now the big day is here. It seemed as tho I had prepared for no one except Eliza, but just as we were ready to sit down to supper, Grant and Emma Dell came. Ate and was to the church house by 6 for picture taking. Before 7 the people started coming. Delores Garner made the cake. It was beautiful; Akin [grocery store], the sheet cake. Ann made the punch which everyone wanted the recipe. Lora Jo combed my hair and [I wore] a nice rose dress. I had lots of compliments. Dad in his dark blue suit was a smasher. Keith had brought his 2 big black chairs for us to sit in. Decorations were lovely. Guessed 150 to 200 people there. And I was afraid no one
[page 73]
would come. Les & Pearl Ballantyne came. Course they came to Skip’s graduation. Sam & Allie Hartley, Dick & Camie Wagstaff—all from Nyssa. Course some I thot would surely come didn’t.
The family put on a program at 8:30. Little kids sang 2 songs. Keith m[aster of] c[eremonies]. Then a double piano duet: Jeri Ann & Jana, Lora Jo & Cheri. Jim gave a detailed sketch of our lives. Then the adults sang 2 numbers & Jesse offered the benediction. Audrey made all the corsages for every one of the family, even babies. They were lovely. One cannot tell how grateful I am for such a good loving family. It is certainly more than we deserve. It was great.
Sunday June 10, 1979
Grant stayed the night, but we all missed Sunday School as he had to go home, but as it was didn’t leave till 11:30. Vanae & Jeri came for a few minutes. Went to Sacrament [meeting]. Compliments came from so many again. I can’t believe it. Brought 2 big boquets of flowers home to Genevie that we left to the chapel over Sunday. Ruby’s mother arranged them. They were outstanding & big.
Told the woman she could rent the house & both of us got a love & kiss.
Monday June 11, 1979
Wanted to leave at 4 to go to Logan to temple, but was 5. Went in camper. Stopped to Deb & Flora. Deb wasn’t home. Flora didn’t look too good.
[page 74]
Picked up Iona Flinders in Nyssa—Lora Jo in Parma. Met Vanae & Jeri in their small car at Kartcher Junction & went to Burley where Jeri left in car to go to Ricks and we went Solinda Knight Christopherson in Logan. Iona went to a cousins. Tired but all happy.
Tuesday to Friday June 12 to 15, 1979
Got to the temple about 10 a.m. to find so many of our family there on both sides: Eunice & Lee; Jane [Stoker] & Marvin; Annie -- Les had to work—Verda we found [out] is in hospital: cancer of uterus—Leo Eastman & Marlene & son; John & Voletta; Glen; Eva; Nina & Alta; Max Hancock; Val & Margaret; Terry & wife; Louis & Doris Phillips, about 50 in our group. We were witnesses. It was great. Then all ate in the temple & Pres. Bullen asked us to have pictures taken to mabe put in Church News. Jim was to write an article. The photo guy was in a hurry and the presidency of temple came to get in it . After it was all over, I feel bad –waiting to see it.
About 4 O’clock all left for home. And Lee & myself got in camper. Lora Jo went to Parma where her car was with Phillip’s. Vanae flew home with Keith. Jesse & boys flew. Audrey & girls came in their motor home. Ray & Dave couldn’t leave [their work in Washington] & Dennis & Myra either.
[page 75]
We stopped to Albertsons and got a melon & gal of milk then went to Logan Canyon. Spent the night in the hills. Next morning went thru the Tetons to Yellowstone. Kind of cool and over cast. Everything was closed to fishing & seen no bears, but did see moose, elk & deer in and out of park also falls, mud pots etc. Yellowstone has really changed since we were there in ’54. Stayed the night at Canyon. It rained and hailed for a hour. Next morning went to Butte, Montana.. Spent night out of Missoula in the Lolo Pass. Then Friday came home early to get our passports in the mail—only to find our pictures weren’t ready and we have to go to a county seat to get them. So unpacked and caught up on news, paper reading. Tired, but so happy. Everything was so lovely. Now to start preparing for our mission. Will have to start now as there is a lot to do.
Monday and Tuesday June 18 and 19, 1979
Went to Ritzville and applied for our passports then I gave them the Church records by mistake so Tuesday I had to make a trip back and take the State of Utah so she sent them both in as the state hadn’t been completely filled in. Got me a pair of shoes in Ritzville.
Ball game, but we lost as usual.
[page 76]
Wednesday June 18 [20], 1979
Another ball game. Same story. We lost, but this was the last. After it was over we drove to White Pass and met Ray, Vanae & 5 younger kids. We took in Mt. Rainier. This time we went a different way. Everything was open and the scenery was beautiful.
Friday 20 [22], 1979
Came home Friday. Lee and myself stopped to Lora Jo’s. She was feeling very blue—just too close to brother problems. I surely hope things will work themselves out, but I can certainly sympathize with Lora Jo also as I know the frusterations etc.
Saturday June 23, 1979
Went to Ron Robbin’s wedding party. They danced so we came home early.
Sunday June 24, 1979
Ward conference. I had forgotten and wore a old short dress and would you believe it. We were called on to speak. Lee gave a very good one, but as usual I felt like nothing was coordinated. I just rambled on. We thot the way the Bishop announced us that that was our going away speech, but last nite he said, “No” so now I have no excuse for the rambling. Conference was good. Afterward we met with a Gilbert that had been home about 2 years from England. He says to buy clothes there. He gave us many helps.
[page 77]
Monday June 25, 1979
Met at park and gave Little Leaugers all the cake & ice cream they could eat. Mothers there too. We went to Dr. Fairbanks for last time today. Think I’m some better than at first, but no improvement last 3 times. Think Lee feels the same way.
Sunday July 1, 1979
Went to Vanae’s and she gave me a perm. Had barb[eque] chicken. It was good. Came home early and worked on a talk.
Thursday, Friday, Saturday July 5, 6, & 7, 1979
Went to Fishhook park. Got there about 2:30 for family reunion. Audrey and Vesta had been there about 10 min[utes]. Then Jim came. Then Ray & Vanae. Then Daryl . Then Jess & Earl. Jim brought Mitzi who is staying with them. Jana slept with her in a small tent & she seems quite nice.
Each family fixed breakfast by himself and lunch, but supper. Audrey made barbques. All helped furnish salads, relish plate, beans, etc. Also had watermelon plus Jess furnished drinks all days.
Keith came about noon Friday. After work Dennis & Jim came. Luray is still in bed, but feeling better. No contractions now. Paul and Donna came for supper with new baby only 3 days old. Larry & Ruby came about noon. Had races in the morning Friday. Horse shoes—winners even got a whole pie apiece for horse shoes. Wind started up just before
[page 78]
we finished supper. By the time we finished , it really blew. People wee grabbing everything before the wind did. It blew down the tents. Our tent bent the middle rod. Earl borrowed small tents of the scouts and he said some of them were torn etc. So since all the tents were down and no place to sleep, everyone went home. It was dark by now. Lee & myself stayed, but wind blew itself out. I guess the rest of the nite was good. Got up Sat. had breakfast. Stopped to Chataneau [Charbaneau] park. Then went to Ice Harbor dam and saw a coast guard boat go up river thru the locks and a big barg[e]. I imagine loaded with wheat go down the river thru the locks. It was interesting. Even seen the fish ladders. Stopped in Pasco & got combine repairs. Also went & seen Luray.
Came home & completely unloaded camper except bed. Probably will have to sleep in it for awhile while we pack our bedroom. Got Got supper and went to Charles Billman and Carrie Garner’s wedding. They looked nice. Robert & Lorna were there. Found that Fae & Lorin are going to the Holbrook mission where
[page 79]
Frank and Fern Stephens were. They enter the mission home about the 9th of August. Right now sure glad our call was to England. Mabe later will wish we were back in good old USA.
Sunday July 8, 1979
Sunday School as usual. About 5 Dennis & Myra came. Hurried and got ready for our big nite. Had spent almost all afternoon preparing for it. A big crowd came. All our family except Luray, Kim and Donna. Glen & Lavon Peterson from Nyssa was there. John & Karen came also. Vern & Ida Bullen. After 2 ½ min. talks, Jana [Knight] played a piano solo. I talked about 10 or 15 minutes on missionary work and the conversion of Paul. Then Larry & Ruby sang. Lee talked about Moses & the difficulty the Children of Iseral had of being set free then their return to idolatry. Then Keith, Jesse, Jim, & Dennis sang a quartet for closing no. Dave opened & Ray closed. Then all came home. Don’t know where I was, but didn’t have a thing fixed. Did have ice cream—enough for a cone apiece after some had left. All told, a complete day. Oh, Dad tried to entertain kids with home movie. Glad it’s over tho. Bet I sleep tonite.

Had guy come out to dishwasher. He said motor was gone & cost too much to repair. So went to Othello & Kelvinator was a little cheaper than G[eneral].E[lectric] so bought Kelvinator for [$]299 plus installation. GE would have been [$]339 plus inst. Pulled beds apart & stacked so slept last nite in camper and about the time we went to bed
[page 80]
10 p.m. the wind started blowing and I wasn’t so sure I wanted to sleep out . The camper just rocked even protected by shed & house. Finally went to sleep tho.
[page 81]
Thursday July 12, 1979
Did our visiting teaching this morning. Kind of chilly with door open. Still a wind blowing. Still packing. Thins are getting worse.
Saturday July 14, 1979
Did some washing and vacuumed. Then Keith called and asked us to go to Moses Lake to the softball tournament. Seen Othello 2nd girls tail end. They won the girls division. Then Othello 3rd ward Jr. boys played. Our boys won. Both Skip & Craig played. Skip was pitcher. Each boy rec a trophy. We left at 3 and got home about 10—a lot of sitting. Othello 2nd Sr. boys lost.
Sunday July 15, 1979
Maia’s birthday today. S[unday] S[chool] as usual. Slept a while then read. But to S S Sr. Mable Roylance gave us a card and in it was a [$]25.00 check. They are great people. I asked Lee about gas in the car and he always loves to run on a empty tank and of course we ran out of gas on our way to church. Fieldings was in front of us and when we didn’t get there, he came back, but by that time Lee had gone to a house & called Craig. So I rode to church with Fielding & Lee came later. HiC nite. Mr.Gearhart and a returned missionary from
[82]
Moses Lake spoke. It was very good. Mr. & Mrs. Ross Peterson came after church for a few minutes.
Monday July 16, 1979
Cleaned & packed. Unloaded freezer & tried to divide into 6 equal parts. With both me & Lee I’m sure they weren’t even but hope it passes. Same as stuff in the house. Baked a frozen pie as well as a cake. Went to park where kids had planned a get together. Me & Audrey took cakes. Genevie & Ruby a Mellon & rest brought pies & ice cream. Dennis & Myra didn’t come as Dennis is hauling lumber & was to St. Maries. They gave us a money tree. $99.00 plus Vanae & I’m giving it back as it’s too much.
Tuesday and Wednesday July 17 and 18, 1979
Cleaned house—woodwork, oven, fridg, everything put away till I can’t find anything. Our bedroom and study is full, full, full. Go Thurs to be set apart as missionaries. Kind of excited. More in a year or so.
