Friday September 1, 1978

I went and helped Lora Jo [1]move. Came home [2] early to be here when Mr. Smith came to fix my stove. A switch went out. We or Lee replaced it but in so doing another one was shorted out. He didn’t have switches with him so all I have is the 2 small units and ovens. Monday is Labor day so I probably won’t get them fixed for a while.

Saturday September 2, 1978

Ann[3] called and asked me to come help her quilt a davano seat she is doing. I just couldn’t go till I cleaned house a little. I have been gone every day for a week. Some old fruit was left to Vanaes.[4] She didn’t want the bottles so I said I would take it an give bottles to Ann. I emptied the fruit in a bucket. Asked Lee where I should empty it and he said “down toilet. So that’s what I did—2 buckets full. Well, yes, today water wouldn’t drain. Guess big peach halves stopped it. I couldn’t wash. Dishes done by hand and water thrown out. Wash a few things out by hand. Toilet backed up into tubs.

I went to Othello and bought [$] 5.00 worth of drain opener. Put some in tubs which by there had

[page 2]

gradually seeped out. Then I went to Ann’s. Found Matt had been sick and hadn’t been to school. His temp[erature] got as high as 105 [degrees]. Direah and vomiting. Jim not too well again either. Didn’t start quilting till about 3 so didn’t get finished till 9. So almost 10 when I got home. Lee got days combine and worked to Davidsons.[5] Sure hope he can get grain up before it gets hurt more. Keith is combining seed by our house. Also hope our combine gets fixed soon.

Anyway when I got home Lee was in bed. He had filled bath tubs with water then opened the drains in hopes the force would dislodge the stoppage. Just before I got in bed, I heard a gurggle and checked. Sure enough both tubs was singing merrily. Thank goodness. Its terrible to be in such a fix. My fault tho.

Sunday September 3, 1978

Went to S[unday] S[chool]. Our lessons this years is on D[octrine] & C[ovenants] I don’t know anything about that book so must study. Also got my R[elief] S[ociety] books. Must study there also.

This afternoon called Jim to see

[page 3]

how he & Matt were. They took Matt to hospital emergency this a.m. Dr. said to use ice & aspirin suppositories & ice & plenty of water to drink. Hope he soon is well.

Bp [Bishop Norman] Garner[6] had a slight stroke yesterday, but he was to testimony meeting tonite. Lois [Garner] Sharp[7] bore her testimony and said Ann Beus [8] to quote “What kind of a church would this church be if all its members were just like me.”—Food for thot. Shape up.

Monday September 4, 1978

Washed and peeled peaches & pears for Luray[9] & Ruby[10] at Rubys . Then we all went with Genevie to Royal and got more peaches.

Tuesday & Wednesday September 5-6, 1978

Spent days running for Lee for combine. He worked Tuesday but Wed[nesday]: was stormy so we collected combine money from Waldron[11] & Casper and McGarys ’77 work. Put it in bank to pay bills. Also got insurance on B[asin] City dwelling as well as [$] 50,000 here [Othello, Billington Road]. They got our combine fixed.

Thursday September 7, 1978

Rained all day—dreary.

Friday September 8, 1978

Went to Vanaes and had my hair put up. Went to M[oses] Lake with Sr. Gilbert to R[elief] S[ociety] stake meeting. Enjoyed it. Hope I can put the message over in ward as I should.

[page 4]

Rained on us on our way home.

Keith called and invited us to go to the football game with them. After we got in car found out that Bruce Farms[12] had fasted and was meeting at Woolleys for prayer then all went to Porterhouse for supper.

Othello beat the ball game 40-0 with Moxee. Rained during game.

Saturday September 9, 1978

Took Lee to Pasco to get truck. On way home got stung with something. Sure didn’t feel good. Got home in rain. Was down for hr or so. Then felt better & done sat. work up.

Sunday September 10, 1978

Went to S[unday] S[chool]. Had lunch then went to Connell for Church dedication. Lot of B[asin] City people there. Stayed to Sacrament meeting but was home by 6:30.

Monday September 11, 1978

Canned 9 qt of peaches on little burner on stove as stove switch was burned out. Cherie [13] called and asked if I would watch Jailyn while they went to Burley for a spud bed. Paid note to Bank. Ann went with me to Royal to get a few pears and frozen vegetables that Lora Jo got for me. Baby cross. Hope better tomorrow. Combined today. Thank goodness.

[page 5]

Wednesday September 13, 1978

Earl & Cheri came for Jailyn. She was as good as could be. Pleasant baby to be around. Lee finished barley to Davidsons. Hope can soon be ready to start in seed.

Thursday September 14, 1978

Sr. Kent[14] called & wants fireside here Sunday. Got Larrys 2 kids tomorrow. Wanted to go to fair. So that may be out. They had to sing to a funeral.

Friday September 15, 1978

Well, didn’t get to fair. Larry came and took Eric about 1 p.m. Ruby came about 5:30. I didn’t feel too well. Upset stomach. Lee finally finished Davidsons grain, but broke a big [$]75.00 belt right at last. So brought combine home. He hurried and went to Othello foodball game. I didn’t. Othello won.

Saturday September 16, 1978

Took Lee to get pickup. Took Rays combine home—1 ½ hr. Took Ray a mellon. Went to Pasco to get belt for combine. Got makings for dessert tomorrow. A few groc[eries]. Took Myra a melon. Got home at 5. Thank goodness I’m feeling better. I must have been sick as I went all that time with my pants on backward. The sti[t]ched crease in the back. Oh, Boy. Straightened up a little then. Went to Othello to the first all womens fireside from S[alt] Lake. Pres[ident] of R[elief] S[ociety], YWMA and Primary

[page 6]

spoke. Then Pres. Kimball.[15] His main theme—abortion, chastity, homemakers, etc. Interesting.

Sunday September 17, 1978

Didn’t get my hair put up Sunday and guess what. Called on to give opening prayer in S[unday] S[chool]. Oh well. Came home and broke Sabbath to get house cleaned for tonite.

Made Raspberry-Angle Cake dessert. About 5 left to go see “Chuck” Davidson[16] who has been in hospital with pneumonia. Took him a piece of dessert.

Went to Sacrament [meeting]. About 18 came for house warming & fireside. They gave us a card and much to my surprise gave us 9--$1.00 bills. Will get something for show in china closet. All enjoyed dessert & visited. Enjoyed it. The people are so friendly. More our age here.[17]

Wednesday and Thursday September 20 and 21, 1978

Went to Genevies to help her clean house for the opening social of R[elief] S[ociety]. Luray was there also.

Friday September 22, 1978

Went to the officers & teachers luncheon to R[elief] S[ociety] President Cox. Was very good. Muffins, blueberry & 3 salads: Macroni, tossed, & fruit, punch & icecream & cookies. Took clothes and a few things including a yellow & white [18]big doilie I had made to the garage sale for building fund. Went to football game. Connell won 40 to 14.

[page 7]

Saturday September 23, 1978

[My] Birthday. Ray, Vanae & Keith & Genevie came. Had ice cr[eam] & cookies. Didn’t feel well. Didn’t go to ward garage sale or to Connell days.

Sunday September 24, 1978

Still not too good. No S[unday] S[chool], for Lee either.

In afternoon Jess, Earl & Daryl & families came. Then Jim & family. They brought home made ice cream and cake. Feeling better. They all brought gifts. Wish they wouldn’t as none of them an afford it.

Wednesday September 27, 1978

Prepared for opening social of R[elief] S[ociety]. Each teacher had to take 1 minute & tell of lessons. I made a visual aid, but when I got there they had a big tree with a leaf for each teacher telling the aim of the lesson. It was held to Gilberts so no place to put it. So I didn’t use it. Only took a min or so. Was about 50 there, I imagine. I had to take cherry cheese cake. All went well.

Thursday September 28, 1978

Went to Pasco to get repairs for my stove. I’m tired of only 2 little burners. Took fire extinguisher back to trade back for our old one and they still couldn’t find ours so they gave me the new one. Fair deal I’d say. Stopped & seen Myra.[18] She doesn’t feel too good. Is going to Kennewick to hospital in about 2 weeks.

[page 8]

Saturday September 30, 1978

Took angel food cake to garage sale. Got few dresses for quilt blocks for 25 cents each. Also got a baby stroller [$]2.00 for Lora Jo and a car seat which I’ll give to Kim [$]3.00. They are finishing Keith’s onions today. So I went out & picked up a sack for each of the kids. So I’m no good now, but got all of my work to do. Cloudy, hope it doesn’t rain as the alfalfa seed is good where they are [combining] now. They should stop and go to Priesthood mt. before conference, but don’t look for them to if they can combine.

Both Othello & Connell won football games last nite. It was too late when Lee came from the combine so we didn’t go. Didn’t make Priesthood [meeting] either—too late when they stopped combines.

Sunday October 1, 1978

Read paper in bed. Got up and tried to get conference. Lee worked for a hour but no good. Read & slept all day. Lee said I snored and every time I did my leg would move. Good thing I didn’t know it.

Went to church at 6. Ella Davidson said they got conference good.

Monday October 2, 1978

Got insurance straightened out on houses. Got vehicles “winterized.” Lee went

[page 9]

on combine after an early lunch. About 3 Eunice[19] called and said Ike[20] had had a heart attact [sic] about 1:30. Figured he died instantly. It really was no big shock. He didn’t look good when we seen him last. Lee should go to the funeral. Don’t know when it is yet.

Tuesday October 3, 1978

Went to Pasco to get car greased etc. They fixed seal on transmission etc. Cost me [$]145.00. Got me a dress. It wasn’t what I wanted, but I couldn’t find one. This was marked 34 and I got it for [$]15. It is more of a summer dress and I was wanting a dark winter dress. Came home and called Eunice. Funeral is at 1 Thursday.

Wednesday October 4, 1978

Left for Utah about 3 [p.m.]. Ended up with just Lee & myself & Jess going, everyone to busy in the harvest. I don’t blame them. Jess rented a plane and I called Eliza[21] [Wagstaff] before left to see if we could use her car when we got there. Ever since Jess was a kid he had said he was going to be an airplane pilot. He now is; however, this is the first time we have flown with him.[22] The trip was very smooth, no bump at all except a few out of Burley, but not bad. Got there about 7:30 [p.m.],[23] Eliza and LaNea[24] waiting for us. We took the car and went to Jane’s[25]to change clothes.

[page 10]

Beverly[26] was there and said if we wanted to get to the viewing we hadn’t better take time to change, so we went in slacks and no ties on men. Most [of the viewers] had gone but still quite a few there & Ivan looked real good. In fact better than I had seen him for years. [His] Family was broken up but that is natural. Really got a surprise. Was told by Jerry[27] that he really appreciated living with us while Ike[28] was in prison and had learned to love us. Course he could have had a few beers but [I] was glad to hear it at the time. Glad we went as Grace wondered where Uncle Lee was.

Went and ate with Verda [29] & Willard. Then went to Elizas & went to bed.

Thursday October 5, 1978

After breakfast drove and visited with Allen[30] & Betty. Went to funeral home. Seen people one very seldom sees—Greenwells,[31] Lavar, Cloyd, & Frank Taylors,[32] Vern Thompson,[33] Fushia[34] etc. The services were very good. Went to the church house for lunch furnished by R[elief] S[ociety]. [written on the top of next page: Called Glen[35] before we left. Felt very good as he said to tell our family the 3 days he was with us [at the family reunion] was most enjoyable 3 days he had had. Feel sorry for him as he cannot go anywhere on account of Laura,[36] but admire him for taking care of her. Left for home about 5. Too late to get away really. Smooth ride but got a jolt after dark. The motors quit. Had run out of gas on one tank. Only

[page 11]

took a second to switch tanks. Didn’t bother me much right then, but a minute later, my old heart started racing etc. All went well till we got home and couldn’t make out the landing strip in B[asin] City, the one owned by Flying sevice, Air Tech. We circled several times. I tried to get Jess to go back to Pasco or on to Othello. I was beginning to get worked up & very nervous. The last circle around the lights came on the strip. Audrey had seen us circling and her and Earl dashed there and got them to turn the lights on. It was gravel and kind of rough landing, but finally our feet was on the good old earth. They went to opening social of R[elief] S[ociety]. We came home and read paper & went to bed, tired but very happy we went and grateful for the protection we had going down and back. We will all miss Ike, but he hadn’t been well for years. I think too much tobacco and beer, but I’m not to judge—only 5 months off from being 65. So he had no S[ocial] Sec[urity] which is tragic, but Grace does have her job at the hospital in Roy and she has Darla.[37] It will be lonely but we might all have to experience it sooner or later.

[page 12]

Friday October 6, 1978

Registered to vote today as it was the last day.[38] That is us. Went to Dr. to get more arthritis pills & heart pills. Didn’t get to see Dr. as he was busy. He O.K.ed pills over phone. Blood pressure still O.K. Went to Connell to football game against Dayton. Connell 49-0. Keith, Genevie and Craig went. Stopped at Vanaes & had ice cream & cookies.

Saturday October 7, 1978

Canned 6 qts of pears. Don’t know how they will taste as they are not bartletts, I’m sure. Lee was in house all day as they finished all Keith’s seed that was ready. Only about 4 acres left & Larry said he would finish it. Lee watched ball games all day. Then we went to Richland to watch Othello and Hanford play. Othello 28, I think. Hanford 6. Went & had supper later. Was 1 a.m. when got home.

Sunday October 8, 1978

Lora Jo called & asked us over for dinner so we went there to Sunday school & fast meeting. On our way home, stopped to Bullens[39] & they gave us 2 buckets of grapes for raisins. Came back in time for firesides to Strates where a woman gave a report on a Carribean cruise.

Monday and Tuesday October 9 and 10, 1978

Lee changing combine over for corn & repairs. Some of Caspers & some of Salisburys,[40] they think is ready.

[page 13]

Went to R[elief] S[ociety], first lesson of season. It was on love. Sr. Peterson[41] gave a good lesson. Bore my testimony—first time since moving. Feel good.

Wednesday October 11, 1978

Had to have a mechanic from Moses Lake come and change bearings in combine. It took them 2 days. I got grapes in dryer for raisins.

Sunday October 15, 1978

Went to Lora Jo’s again for dinner. Phillips[42] were up so had a very good meal & visit. Came home for sacrament [meeting] here. High Council nite. Mr. Robins[43] from Royal and Ron.[44] Ron came out an spent an hours with us after meeting. Ron & Kim was dating heavily when he went on his mission. Then Kim met John.[45]

Monday October 16, 1978

Moved combine, camper, pickup and car to Basin City –ready for corn at Caspers. Parked camper by dryer. Thot it would be terribly noisy especially at nite, but guess we can take it. Even brought dog,[46] but keep him tied up. A young couple that works for Easterdays[47] lives in the house. They have 4 dogs. They seem nice.

Tuesday October 17, 1978

Missed R[elief] S[ociety] homemaking as I have to be here to help Lee unload corn and run dryer. Camper quite comfortable for 2. Would be terribly crowded with more tho. Kim & John had a nice baby girl, LesLee.[48] All went well.

Friday October 20, 1978

After days work, we hurried with supper and went to Othello to ball game. It was cold, but we enjoyed it. Othello hasn’t lost

[page 14]

a game yet. Skip played a good game. Genevie is up with Kim. Larry sat in her seat. Keith spent all the time on the field around the players. Skip hurt his ribs but still played.

Sunday October 22, 1978

Got up early & crammed for the R[elief] S[ociety] lesson today. Didn’t know I had it to give on Sunday until about a week ago. I think it went over O.K. I had good participation. About 20 there, I imagine. If only Tues. was over. They announced Ardath Baker[49] had passed away and her funeral would be held Monday. At Sacrament a recently returned [missionary] Elder Moulton spoke.

Monday October 23, 1978

Hauled 2 loads of corn. Then got ready and went to Moses Lake to Ardath’s funeral. Found out she had a heart attact [sic] and was found dead in her bed. We were too late to view her. A big crowd there. After services went and visited a minute or two with----she played the organ. As a result we were late getting to the cemetery. There visted with Wade & Afton Baker.[50] Wade spoke at the funeral. Newell and Roselle Baker, Paul & Donna & Keith. Donna said Dennis took Myra to the hospital. We then went to South Shore restaurant for supper. Had fish. It was good. Came home and tried to call hospital, but no one answered so went up to camper.

[page 15]

But decided to go to Jesse’s and try calling hospital again. But Audrey said Dennis had called and they had a 7 lb 3 oz boy. Called hospital anyway. This time I got C[h]ris Blanch.[51] Becky [his wife] was in the same room with a new girl. I thot it was Dennis so as a result made a fool of myself again. Finally Dennis came on line. Was he ever proud. Said boy came breach but every thing O.K.

Tuesday October 24, 1978

Drove to Othello to give my lesson again. Only about 8 there in my dep[ar]t[ment]. But again all went well. Or at least all said they enjoyed it and I think they did. It [the lesson] was “Making the most of today.” Got dog food & propane and milk and came home. After work we hurridly got cleaned up and went to hospital to see Myra. Visiting hours was from 7 to 8 and it was 9 when we got there, but visited Myra in hallway. Stopped at Dennis’ for a minute after getting a hamburger. Myra is going to her mothers for a few days.

Friday October 27, 1978

1977 beet check came yesterday so today I picked up Ann and went to Pasco to pay last half of taxes. The last we will have to pay on our farm. They were over $4,200.00. Went to Midas and had a new muffler put on car. It was better than [$]77.00. It doesn’t take long to go thru a beet check.

[page 16]

Got Bryce—that is grandson’s name—a sweater and pants & shirt. Hurried home as figured Lee would be anxious to go to ballgame, but when he got set down he decided not to go.

Saturday October 28, 1978

Time changed. Wish they would leave it on daylight Savings. We didn’t have to be to Moses Lake for stake conference till 11:30. So seems like late when we finally left. Lee sang in choir. Othello 2 & 3 wards and Royal had to sing. Lora Jo conducted first song. It was all good. Dave was released from his stake

[page 17]

job and as he wasn’t sustained in any other position, we wondered. So went to Royal for sacrament. They changed bishoprics and Dave was sustained as 1st councelor.[52] It will be hard for them with a young family, but very rewarding. He should be good in there. Phillips were there also. Just happened to come up again.

Monday October 30, 1978

Came back to camper this a.m. Lee was fixing chain on combine and wrenched his right arm. He can hardly move it. Don’t know how he can manage. I went and helped him get it fixed. Then came and got diesel for him. He is going to Jesses. Finished Salisbury[53] & brought combine to grain bins.

Tuesday October 31, 1978

Haloween. Ghost & goblins.

Lee spent a miserable nite. I went to Jesses & got heat pad. Had to miss R[elief] S[ociety] as had to go to Pasco and get combine belt for Lee. Jesse isn’t quite ready for combine so he went to Dave Freemans[54]—25 acres. Must hurry as time is getting away. Only Jim brought kids for trick or treat.

Wednesday November 1, 1978

Went to Cheris and tended kids while she reported to jury duty. They were good. No cases so she was home by noon. I had fed the kids as Kenny[55] had to catch buss at 11. Lee got home early as he got all but 2 acres of Freemans corn.

[page 18]

And it was too wet. We moved combine over to Jesse’s. He filled combine. Jess sure has some tall corn. Looks good.

Thursday November 2, 1978

Lee took truck to field. I went later in pickup so he would have it there in case of breakdowns. Then was going to come back to camper when Lee brought loaded truck to empty but Jesse came and said corn was to go to Othello so he brought me home and Lee took corn in. Had to make a rush trip to Pasco to get bolts and break tubing for Lee. Went over and helped him get it fixed. He brought Red (the dog) home. He took him to field and he got caught in coyote trap. Guess was there most of day--poor thing . But just caught toes of one front leg.

Friday November 3, 1978

Fried pheasant for supper Lee had shot. Sprinkled a little in the nite. We decided we just might as well come home [to Othello] seeing Jesse wasn’t going to use grain bins. We’ve been in camper for 3 weeks except for Sundays. Really it hasn’t been too bad for 2 but more would have been a crowd. We left camper there. Took me till noon to get clothes etc loaded in car and get home and unload it. It rained so Lee was home

[page 19]

before I was. Surely hope it doesn’t keep showering so farmers are delayed in corn. Went to the Othello-Grandview football game. It was very close. Grandview won in overtime 26 to 27. The wind really set it up. Sure hope it doesn’t blow corn down.

Saturday November 4, 1978

Yes corn did go down—everyone’s. Jess got his trucks ready to go.

Sunday November 5, 1978

Sunday. Didn’t go to S[unday] S[chool] as went to Pasco to fast meeting. Kim had her baby blessed. Named her LesLee afer Kim’s 2 grandpas,[56] I suppose. She is a cute little thing. After meeting, took Dennis, Myra, Mindi, and Bryce to dinner. Bryce wasn’t too happy. Myra said he doesn’t sleep nights either.

Came home by way of Connell, but no one home. I broke speed law because I had to go to bathroom so bad, but no, door was locked so I run out to the outside one. Just thankful they have one. We don’t. Came home and was I ever sick—sick to my stomach plus running. Thot sure I was going to faint. So about 7 I took the book on Pres. Kimball’s[57] life that Ann had let me borrow and went to bed. Read & dozed till Lee came to bed.

Tuesday November 7, 1978

Yesterday the men didn’t do much combining. They changed rubbers on combine & chain etc. But today they made 7 loads or Lee figured

[page 20]

about 30 acres. Hope they can keep it up, but as usual I missed R[elief] S[ociety]. I’ve only been to 2 day session since I moved here. I had to go to Moses Lake and get a chain. I got ready to go to R[elief] S[ociety]. Figured I could get it and still make church but it was time it was starting when I got back with parts. Then I had to come back to Othello and get filters for them.

I did stop and vote coming home.[58] When Lee got home he was so tired he didn’t go.

Wednesday November 8, 1978

Had to take Lees check book to him at Othello. They broke another chain. About 11 Larry came in. (They are working stacking bee boards) and asked me there for dinner. Didn’t like to put Ruby out but he insisted which was very nice of them. I just got home when Lee came in all doubled up in pain in his back. Monday he was going over washboard roads in the old pickup and lost control of it and it turned on its side in the borrow pit. Out went 100 gal gas tank, tools & everything. He righted both gas tank and pickup by himself. Drove to field and Jess took loader and brought gas tank to field. He evidently hurt his back

[page 21]

then and it is just now catching up to him. He stayed in bed the rest of day on hot pad. Jesse & boys took over in the field. They are great. Lee has got to take better care of himself. He does so many silly things but don’t we all. I hate to see him quit working entirely but this year. He has over done it. Have been on combine steady almost since last of July. It is beginning to tell on him. But he doesn’t complain much, but I sure have to rub his back, arms, and neck a lot.

Thursday November 9, 1978

At 5:30 we piled out as usual. Lee said he was much better so he was gone by 6:30. Surely hope he isn’t going to make things worse, but he said it almost took 4 of them in corn—3 on trucks plus combine. He is great, for all his faults. I love him. I’ve been crocheting doilies for Vanae’s birthday. Have made 2. Will do a pillow next.

The wind has quit blowing this a.m. Yesterday it was bad. I now have my lawn raked without any effort on my part at all. It was down to 20 degrees this a.m.

Wind has started up again really cold to me anyway. Hat the thots of winter as I freeze now. Lee got home after dark and I thot he had grease on his left eye, but it was a big black eye.

[page 22]

Blank

[page 23]

Blank

[page 24]

Looked terrible. His eye was only a slit. He was putting a chain on combine that had come off and his bar he was prying with slipped and he lost his balance and his face hit combine. I bet it really hurt.

Friday November 10, 1978

Wind blew all nite –still terribly cold. Got up at 5. Lee was gone by 5. Eye blacker than last nite but not swollen as much. Awfully cold.

Went with Ray to Medical Lake to watch Connell & Chewela. Connell 20-Chewella 21.

Saturday November 11, 1978

Lee left early for work. Keith called and asked us to the football game—the play offs for Othello. Held here. I went with him. It was a sunny clear day. No wind, but cold. My feet almost froze. Othello won 26 -25. Afterward Keith brought me home. Lee was home, game was at 1:30, so they came in. Played rook. Fixed easy chili & baked a huckleberry pie—good. Both Scott & Skip played in respective schools and both did real well. Proud.

Sunday November 12, 1978

Lee wouldn’t go to church on account of his eye. I didn’t get up early enough to get my hair washed & dried so I didn’t go either. No Sacrament [meeting] either. Read, slept all day.

Monday November 13, 1978

Bad days for combine—belt, bearings downed corn etc & still 10 degrees. Sure cold. Went to Dr. today. He scared me. Said it was a [cancer]. D&C[59] he thot for sure, but wait until pap smear test comes back.

[page 25]

Didn’t know what to think. One time told me my heart was good. Next time said it was in bad shape. But as long as it doesn’t bother me anymore than it is now, I won’t worry too much. Got chest pains quite often, but not hard. Got to loose [sic] weight. I’ve gained 4 lbs since there last time. Am really going to try. Said it looked like cataracts were starting to form so must go to eye Dr. Sure don’t want that.

Tuesday November 14, 1978

Pickup has a flat tire so Lee took car. I went to R[elief] S[ociety] with Genevie. She was going to town. Did our teaching later but didn’t get 1. Still combine troubles.

Friday November 17, 1978

Went to Moses Lake for stake R[elief] S[ociety] with Donna Woolley. I get much good out of them. When I got home, Lee was here. Said corn was plenty wet. Would go again Monday. Was glad as I thot I would have to take camper to Lora Jos to tend kids while they went to Seattle to a solomen [solemn] assembly. Tried to get him to go also but wouldn’t. Got there about 5. All well. They left at noon, except Melissa had on dirty diapers and had had them for awhile. Made tacos for supper.

Saturday November 18, 1978

Got up to snow--a fine flake that took awhile to make things white, but it did get that way. Then the wind started. All went well in house as it was warm. Dave & Lora Jo got home about

[page 26]

10. Joey was sure nervous and couldn’t get to sleep. So he crawled in bed with me; then came Lee & we watched TV. Then I sent them to bed, but no one was asleep when Dave came so then it was after 11. They said the roads were slick and drifted in places. They were sure glad to be home.

Sunday November 19, 1978

Got up early as Dave had Bishops meeting at 6. The counselor[60] that they went with to Seattle was going to pick him up, but he ended up by walking. Had got 2 cars stuck in snow drifts. Still blowing & snowing. They decided to hold bishops meeting to Daves so bishop came in 4 wheel drive. Then all decided to go to church where more would come for exc. meeting. Before long Dave called and said all meetings were cancelled. So I stayed as there was a drift in back of my car & I couldn’t get out of yard—not alone to the highway.

Monday November 20, 1978

The wind & snow has stopped but roads still not plowed out. About a dozen cars got stuck not far from Daves. Had dinner then Dave & Spud[61] were going to Moses Lake and came then—all well at home.

Tuesday November 21, 1978

My lesson in R[elief] S[ociety]. Got up early to

[page 27]

study, but couldn’t get out of house for snow. So while Lee was still in bed, I shoveled snow. They or Keith Woolley came Monday morning and cleaned driveway. Had breakfast & not much time left for study. Got along OK but felt like I could have been better prepared. Stays cold—snow not melting. Lots of beets & corn still out. Jesse 3 circles corn & Bruce farms 350 acres of beets here.

Thursday November 23, 1978

Thanksgiving. Went to Keiths. Took salads, carrot pudding & cooked spuds here. Ray, Dennis, Paul, Jim & us. So a housefull, but it was real good. Came home about 9 and watched Hawaii 5-O[62] and Barnaby Jones.

Friday November 24, 1978

Othello plays football between Tacoma & Seattle at …. To see who goes to state. They play Peninsula on artificial turf & they took 4 rooter busses so we went, cost [$]11.00 each but was nice. Stopped at Is[s]aqquah for Salisbury steaks going, and, Fish & chips coming. Steak was good, but I didn’t eat coming home as I was too full. Othello lost 33 to 20, I think—played good but---. Got home at 4.a.m.

Saturday November 25, 1978

Washed. It has moderated some so they are digging beets, but corn still covered. It stays cold. Doesn’t warm up too much

[page 28]

Sunday November 26, 1978

Went to S[unday] S[chool] also Relief Society. Got to talk in S[unday] S[chool] next Sundy. About 4 went to the one person we missed in our teaching. Went to Sacrament [Meeting]. Paid some tithing. We haven’t paid any this year so will have a lump all at once. But next year—tithing is going to be paid first.

Monday November 27, 1978

Went to Dr. to get results of pap test. Thank goodness it came back OK, but Dr. still wants to do a D&C. I don’t want to take any chances, but why spend money & pain if I don’t have to. I just wish I knew what to do—get a second opinion, I suppose. Still am not losing any weight—heavier now than I’ve ever been. Guess that’s why I don’t get anything done. Can’t move. Men are still in beets, slow going. Still freezing & cloudy, not pleasant at all.

[page 29]

Wednesday November 29, 1978

Went to Moses Lake with Lora Jo. She did some Santa shopping—dolls. I got a book, Mark Mouse. We are going to try to make some for handouts. Rainy (a drizzle].

Thursday November 30, 1978

Studied for talk Sunday. Afternoon tended Elisa.[64] Is she a go-getter. Pulled everything out.

Friday December 1, 1978

Got up and rain had turned to snow and foggy. Imagine roads are slick. U & I Sugar Co.[65] had announced earlier it was selling its plants, but gave the impression it maybe would operate in ’79. Now it came out it was through as of ’78—a low blow to farmers. Will glut market in other crops.

Saturday December 2, 1978

At nite went up to Genevies to get my hair put up. Walked up in evening. Stayed & played a form of rook. Called Lee. He came up & had sandwiches & a Whirlpool bath.

Sunday December 3, 1978

Got early to church as Alison[66] had turned the hands on our clock so we took the time of it. Lee even forgot his glasses. We gave our talks on appreciation of God & Son, Jesus Christ. Got a lot of compliments—earned or not.

Ray & Vanae & little ones came for an hr.

[page 30]

Went to fast meeting.

Monday December 4, 1978

Vanae’s birthday. Took her 2 crocheted pillows & a doilie. She was painting, doing a lot of it—built 2 new bedrooms. It’s going to be nice. So I didn’t stay long. Went on to Pasco. Got groceries for kids Christmas. Spent over [$]100.00. Dark when I got home. Lee said Genevie called & wanted me to go to Spokane with her tomorrow & stay with Kim at night. Guess will go.

Rained about all day so didn’t get much done in corn.

Tuesday December 5, 1978

Clear and sunny today. Really seems good. Genevie called and asked me to go to Spokane which naturally, I did. Stayed at Kim’s.[67] Went to discount stores: White Elephant, Jafco, K-Mart. I didn’t get much as I had gone Monday & did about all I’m going to do. Did get the boy & girl with umbrella for our house warming gift from our age groups from ward.

Wednesday December 6, 1978

Shopped but couldn’t find shoes or coat. Got home about 10:30. Kim came down with us—roads cold & frosty. Hit some fog. Glad to be home. Stays cold. Got to 18 or less last nite.

[page 31]

got mostly dresses—cute ones tho. Lora Jo let me off at Basin City where Becky[69] was to be baptized. Got there at same time they did. Lee talked so he was there also. After Scott[70] had baptized Becky –before Vanae could make it around to the steps, Becky started swimming to the surprise of every one.

We then came to Othello where they were having a supper for the building fund. I had to take 2 pecan pies which Lee dropped off. We were sent pledges to stake how much we could donate to the building fund. We pledged [$]1,000.00 and that nite paid [$]500.00. Surely hope we can make it.

Sunday December 10, 1978

Tuesday December 20 [19], 1978

Had to take Jello salad for Christmas party at R[elief] S[ociety]. Made Eliza’s cottage cheese and lime—plain lime on top—molded. It was good. Exchanged Christmas tree decorations. I got a cute skier. Weather foggy all day. Didn’t like to drive. Lee went to B[asin] City and brought our boat here. Got Christmas cards addressed. Not sending as many this year. Got to take Buick in as radiator leads somewhere & brakes gone. Working on books. Got Buick home. Don’t know the cost. Coming down with cold.

Thursday December 21, 1978

Chinook wind blowing so they can combine. But it doesn’t seem as tho we can get rid of our worrying. Casper

[page 33]

called and said the corn was coming out black—not dried enough. Lee went up so I was alone all day to worry. Evidently, one load got put up too wet. Lee said it wasn’t too bad, but would have to be sold for pig feed, and we will have to make up the difference. Think we have insurance on it, but not sure. Got 3 loads of corn combined yesterday. Surely hope farmers can get corn & beets both out.

Sunday December 24, 1978

Santa really unloaded there—lots of clothes & night clothes, etc. They even got them a waterbed which they really like. Got their house almost all done remodeling. It’s really going to be nice. Just got home and Keith called and asked us up to play rook. Went, while there, Ray Vanae came bu8t came up to Keiths. They brought me her drapes that they had in Homedale—really nice. Best I’ve ever had. Got to get hardware & get them up.

[page 35]

Wednesday December 27, 1978

Went to Pasco again. Vanae and girls went. Took Nichole to Dr. Her glands were all swollen up. It started snowing, making roads slick. Didn’t get a thin, looked for dresses, but didn’t get any.

Thursday December 28, 1978

About noon went to B[asin] City to finish cleaning & getting bed, etc from basement. Found things a mess. Door had been left open—cats & mice. Then pumping septic tank didn’t solve the problem. [38] In early July 1977 the pro-ERA and anti-ERA movements met up at the 1977 Washington State Women's Conference held in Ellenburg, Washington. The events which transpired at the Ellensburg conference shaped the admistration of Governor Dixy Lee Ray in many ways. Governor Ray, Washington's first woman governor, dissolved the Washington State Women's Council in September of 1978, following the will of the voters. At that 1977 Ellensburg Convention, the LDS stakes in the region organized many Mormon women to attend and vote against the amendment. By 1978, 35 states had ratified the Equal Rights Amendment. Three more states needed to ratify in order to make it part of the US Constitution. Mormons for ERA were a pro-ERA organization that worked, rallied, and lobbied for the ERA to be ratified in those states that had yet to do so. This very small, but outspoken group of Mormons, led by Sonia Johnson protested and organized a group called “Mormons for ERA leading some to back her future bid as a feminine candidate for the U.S. president . Ethel would follow church instructions to defeat the ERA movement and would vote against any candidates that leaned toward pro-ERA.
